[Cherokee Bread manuscript], [between 1907 and 1913?].

Manuscript, compiled and transcribed by tribal scribe, Cherokee Bread (who may also have been a medicine man), probably between 1907 and 1913, possibly containing accounts of Cherokee history, descriptions of sacred ceremonies and customs practiced by the Oklahoma tribe, or medical formulae. Text on ledger leaves appears to be continuous, and is arranged in sections numbered 87-185, and 202-319, with some gaps and some overlaps.

Although the Treaty of Hopewell (1785) defined the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation and the U.S., Congress during the Confederation period was unable to keep white squatters off Cherokee lands. With violence escalating between Cherokees and settlers, particularly those of the "State of Franklin" (now Tennessee), Congress in Sept. of 1788 issued a proclamation forbidding white intrustion on Cherokee land.
